COMMUNITY GROUP GUIDE
LEARNING TO LIVE FREE
A Journey Through Exodus
Each week, our Community Groups take the Sunday teaching into the rest of the week. We gather around a table, open Scripture, share our lives, practice the way of Jesus, and make space for the Holy Spirit together.
These guides are designed to help you do that. Use this with your Community Group, with a few friends, or on your own.
THIS WEEK: WHAT DOES GOD SAY WHEN YOU'RE NOT ENOUGH?
Exodus 3:1–14
Moses asks a question most of us eventually ask:
Who am I to do this? Am I really enough?
God's answer is surprising. He doesn't point Moses back to his gifts, abilities, or potential. He gives Moses something better:
“I will be with you.”
This week we're exploring what it means to stop building our lives around being enough and learn to depend on the presence of the God who is.
BIG IDEA:
The answer to my inadequacy isn't becoming enough. It's learning to live in dependence on the God who is.
Approx. 75–90 minutes
Gather + Scripture + Conversation + Practice + Prayer
GATHER | 10–15 MIN
Eat, catch up, and begin with a question that gets people into their actual lives:
Where is one place in your life right now where you feel a little out of your depth?
TELL THE STORY | 5 MIN
Moses once saw injustice and essentially said:
“I'll handle it.”
It ended disastrously.
Forty years later, he's in the wilderness tending somebody else's sheep.
God meets Moses there. He calls him by name. He tells Moses that he has seen Israel's suffering, heard their cries, and has come down to rescue them.
Then comes the surprise:
“I'm sending you.”
SCRIPTURE | 15–20 MIN
Read Exodus 3:11–14
Don't try to cover the whole chapter. Read less and notice more.
Talk together:
What stands out to you?
What do you notice about Moses? About God?
What questions does this raise for you?
WHAT IF YOU'RE ACTUALLY NOT ENOUGH?
Moses asks:
“Who am I?”
God answers:
“I will be with you.”
Notice what God doesn't do.
God doesn't argue Moses out of his inadequacy.
He doesn't say, Moses, stop being so insecure. You're amazing. Believe in yourself.
He gives Moses something better than adequacy:
Himself.
Around the Table | 15 MIN
Talk honestly together:
Where are you putting pressure on yourself to be enough?
What would it mean to admit, “I may actually not be enough for this”?
Does that feel frightening or freeing? Why?
What changes if your confidence moves from your capacity to God's presence?
THE JOURNEY TO FREEDOM | 10 MIN
Notice the journey happening in Moses.
ENSLAVED:
“I see it. I'll handle it.”
BROKEN:
“Who am I? I can't handle it.”
FREE:
“If Your Presence doesn't go with us, I'm not going.”
That's not Moses losing confidence.
That's Moses finally learning where confidence belongs.
THE I AM COMES NEAR
God says:
“I have seen. I have heard. I know. I have come down.”
And ultimately, God comes down in Jesus.
Emmanuel. God with us.
The answer isn't:
“I am enough.”
It's something better:
“I AM. And I am with you.”
Our confidence doesn't have to come from convincing ourselves that we're capable of handling everything.
Our confidence can come from knowing we aren't alone.
PRACTICE TOGETHER | 15 MIN
Keep it simple. Practice three things this week.
1. SLOW DOWN
Put the phone down. Open Scripture. Sit quietly.
Pray:
“God, I'm here. Help me become aware of You.”
2. SURRENDER
Where are you still saying:
“I'll handle it”?
Name what you're carrying as though everything depends on you.
Open your hands and surrender it to God.
3. BECOME AVAILABLE
Stop asking:
“Am I impressive enough?”
Instead ask:
“God, what are You already doing, and how can I join You?”
ENCOUNTER + PRAYER | 15–20 MIN
Open your hands if you're comfortable.
Leave real quiet between each prompt. Silence isn't failure. Don't manufacture anything.
Slowly pray:
“Holy Spirit, where am I exhausted from trying to be enough?”
Pause.
“Jesus, what am I carrying as though everything depends on me?”
Pause.
“Father, help me become aware that You are with me.”
Pause.
In Twos or Threes
Share one place where you need God's presence more than your own ability.
Then pray simply for one another.
No fixing. No advice. Listen, bless, and pray.
TAKE IT INTO THE WEEK
Return to these three movements:
SLOW DOWN.
Become aware of God's presence.
SURRENDER.
Release what you've been carrying as though everything depends on you.
BECOME AVAILABLE.
Ask what God is already doing and how you can join him.
And when you hear yourself asking:
“Am I enough?”
Remember God's answer to Moses:
“I will be with you.”
The answer to my inadequacy isn't becoming enough. It's learning to live in dependence on the God who is.
