WHAT HAS HOLD Of ME?

Exodus 1–2 | Fall Theme: Freedom

Big Idea: Whatever I serve will shape who I become.

Fall Formation Theme: Freedom
Biblical freedom is bigger than getting away from something. Jesus sets us free from old masters and teaches us how to live as sons and daughters of the King.

WELCOME + CONNECT | 10–15 MIN

Start with something easy:

What is something you have gotten weirdly obsessed with at some point in your life?

A hobby, sport, show, food, fitness kick, purchase, home project, whatever.

Have fun with it. Let people tell stories.

Then move toward the night:

At what point does something we enjoy or care about begin to have too much power over us?

You don't need to solve the question. Just let it open the conversation.

THE STORY | 10 MIN

Leader: briefly tell the story rather than reading all of Exodus 1–2.

Exodus begins with God's people enslaved in Egypt. Pharaoh has built an entire system around fear, production and control. Israel exists to produce for someone else.

But then we meet Moses.

Moses looks free. He grows up inside Pharaoh's household with privilege and opportunity. Yet when he sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, he takes matters into his own hands.

Read only Exodus 2:11–12.

Moses sees the injustice, then "looked this way and that" before killing the Egyptian.

Sunday we said:

He looks this way. He looks that way. But he doesn't look up.

Compassion is good. Justice is good. Moses wants the right thing.

But Moses isn't free either.

He is still being driven by something.

That's one of the surprises of Exodus:

You can look free and still be enslaved.

And you can even be pursuing the right thing while being driven by the wrong master.

WHAT MASTERS US? | 20 MIN

Bring it into our world:

When you look at life in Los Angeles, what are some of the things that seem to have a hold on people?

Career. Money. Image. Relationships. Success. Kids. Approval. Politics. Control. Comfort. Being needed. Being right.

Then make it more personal:

Which of those pressures do you feel most in your own life right now?

And then go a layer deeper:

Finish this sentence:

"I feel like I have to __________."

Give everyone a moment to think.

"I have to succeed."

"I have to make enough money."

"I have to keep everyone happy."

"I have to fix this."

"I have to be a good parent."

"I have to know what's going to happen."

"I have to prove myself."

Let people share if they're comfortable.

Then ask:

What are you afraid might happen if you didn't?

Stay here if the conversation gets meaningful.

Sometimes the things that master us hide underneath our best desires.

GOD IN THE BACKGROUND | 10–15 MIN

Leader: simply tell this part of the story.

Before Moses ever does anything to rescue Israel, God is already at work.

Pharaoh orders Hebrew baby boys killed. Yet Pharaoh's own daughter rescues Moses. Moses' own mother ends up being paid by Pharaoh's household to care for the child Pharaoh's policy said should die.

Pharaoh thinks he controls the story.

He doesn't.

That doesn't mean every baby survived. They didn't.

Providence isn't the promise that nothing terrible will happen. It's the confidence that terrible things don't get the final word.

Ask:

Where in your life is it hardest right now to believe that God may be at work even though you can't see what He's doing?

Then:

What might trusting God look like there instead of trying to control the outcome yourself?

THE GOSPEL | 5 MIN

Moses eventually becomes the deliverer God uses to lead Israel out of slavery.

But Jesus goes deeper.

Jesus says:

"If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
John 8:36

The gospel isn't simply try harder to stop being controlled by things.

A new King has come.

Jesus breaks the power of our old masters and gives us His Spirit to teach us how to live free.

And this is something we'll keep discovering throughout Exodus:

Israel will get out of Egypt long before Egypt gets out of Israel.

God doesn't just rescue people from something. He forms them into something.

That's our journey this fall too.

PRACTICE: ONE STEP TOWARD FREEDOM | 5–10 MIN

Take a quiet moment and ask God:

What has a hold on me right now?

What would trusting Jesus with it look like?

What is one concrete act of freedom I can practice this week?

It might mean resting. Giving something away. Saying no. Telling the truth. Asking for help. Apologizing. Turning something off. Refusing to manipulate an outcome. Praying before acting.

Don't try to change your entire life this week.

Choose one small practice of freedom.

PRAY + MINISTER TO ONE ANOTHER | 10–15 MIN

Open your hands as a simple posture of surrender.

Jesus, is there something that has more of a hold on me than I realize?

Leave some silence.

Then:

Jesus, what are You inviting me to trust You with?

Leave space again.

Invite people to share anything they sensed, then pray for one another.

Jesus, You are our Deliverer and our King. Set us free from the things that master us, and by Your Spirit teach us how to live as free sons and daughters. Amen.

LEADER NOTE

The goal is not to finish the guide.

If one question creates 20 minutes of honest conversation, stay there.

We want our groups to increasingly become places where people are known, encounter Jesus, practice His way together, and take real steps toward freedom.
