THE MONDAY PRACTICE

The Gift of Sabbath

Disruptive Discipleship Series | Deut 5:12-15

Bring Sunday’s Message Into Your Week

This spiritual practice guide is designed to help you take Sunday’s message and actually live it out with Jesus during the week. We don’t just want to hear the Word—we want to practice it.

Use this in your personal time with God to reflect, pray, and put the message into motion through everyday spiritual practices. Let this be a tool to slow down, surrender, and be transformed.

Sunday’s Big Idea:

We live in a world that never stops working — but God calls His people to resist anxious, endless hustle through the gift of Sabbath rest. Sabbath sets us free from slavery to performance, roots our identity in His love, and renews us for the good work He’s called us to do.

1. Read & Reflect

Take 5–10 minutes today to slowly read this passage:

Deuteronomy 5:12–15
“Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you… Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.”

Reflection:

  • What “Egypt” does God want to free you from right now?

  • Where are you still working like a slave instead of living like a free child of God?

2. Resist the Hurry

Phil reminded us that Sabbath is resistance. It’s a bold “no” to the gods of hustle and scarcity.

Practice:

  • Identify one small place today where you can slow down.

    • Can you put your phone away for 30 minutes?

    • Can you choose to pause an unfinished task and trust it can wait?

    • Can you take a slow walk with no headphones — just you and God?

3. Plan Your Sabbath

Rest doesn’t happen by accident — it’s planned.

Practice:

  • Take 10 minutes today to plan your next Sabbath.

  • What would feel truly life-giving for you?

  • Who could you rest or celebrate with?

  • How could you mark it with a small ceremony (a meal, candles, a blessing)?

Ask God: “Father, how do You want me to rest this week?”

4. Root Your Identity

In rest, we learn we are loved apart from our work.

Practice:
Sit still for 5 quiet minutes today and pray:
“Father, remind me I am Yours. I am loved not for what I do, but because I belong to You.”

Let Him speak His delight over you — just as He did over Jesus before He did any ministry.

Prayer to Close

Lord of the Sabbath, teach me to rest in Your love. Rescue me from anxious work. Root my identity in Your delight. Make my rest a quiet rebellion that declares: I trust You hold it all. Amen.
