THE PRODIGAL GOD

A 5-Day Formation Journey from Luke 15

Big Idea This Week:

God is not distant—He is pursuing.

Before you ever turned toward Him,
He was already moving toward you.

This week is about slowing down enough
to recognize His pursuit
and respond.

Each day follows a simple rhythm:

  1. Read

  2. Reflect

  3. Go Deeper

  4. Prayer

  5. Practice

Move slowly. Do not rush.

DAY 1 — THE GOD WHO SEEKS

Who is God moving toward?

Read:

Luke 15:1–7

Read slowly. Then read it again.

Jesus tells a story about a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep
to go after one that is lost.

Notice what the shepherd does:

He goes.
He searches.
He finds.
He rejoices.

God is not passive.
He moves toward the lost.

REFLECT

Where in your life do you feel:

  • distant from God?

  • unsure of where you stand with Him?

  • like you’ve drifted without realizing it?

Jesus says the shepherd goes after the one
until he finds it.

Not if.
Until.

GO DEEPER

Read Ezekiel 34:11–16

God promises:

“I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.”

God’s pursuit of you is not new.
It is consistent with His character.

PRAYER

Adoration
God, You are the One who seeks.

Confession
Where I have drifted, I confess it to You.

Listening
Sit quietly for 3 minutes.

Ask:
“Lord, where have I wandered?”

Write down what surfaces.

PRACTICE

Pay attention today:

Where might God already be moving toward you?

Notice moments of:

  • conviction

  • comfort

  • interruption

These may be signs of His pursuit.

DAY 2 — THE GOD WHO SEARCHES CLOSELY

What if you’re lost and don’t know it?

Read:

Luke 15:8–10

The coin did not wander.
It did not rebel.

It was simply lost.

Unaware.

But the woman:

Lights a lamp
Sweeps the house
Searches carefully

Until she finds it.

REFLECT

Where might you be:

  • spiritually distracted?

  • living on autopilot?

  • not rejecting God—but not pursuing Him either?

Sometimes lostness is subtle.

GO DEEPER

Read Psalm 139:23–24

“Search me, O God, and know my heart…”

Invite God to reveal what you cannot see.

PRAYER

Adoration
God, You see what I cannot.

Confession
Show me where I’ve been unaware of You.

Listening
Ask:

“Lord, what am I missing right now?”

Sit quietly.

PRACTICE

Create space today:

  • turn off noise

  • slow your pace

  • take a short walk without distraction

Ask God to bring awareness to your life.

DAY 3 — THE GOD WHO RUNS

What is God’s posture toward you?

Read:

Luke 15:17–24

The son prepares a speech.

He expects:

  • distance

  • rejection

  • to earn his way back

But instead:

The father sees him from far away.
He runs.
He embraces.
He restores.

Before the son can finish speaking.

REFLECT

When you fail or feel far from God:

  • What do you expect from Him?

  • Distance?

  • Disappointment?

  • Silence?

How does this story challenge that?

GO DEEPER

Read Romans 5:8

“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God’s love moves first.

PRAYER

Adoration
Father, You are not distant—you run toward me.

Confession
I confess where I expect You to reject me.

Receiving
Sit quietly and picture the Father running toward you.

Let that image shape your prayer.

PRACTICE

Write down one sentence you’ve believed:

“I have to fix this before coming to God.”

Then write underneath:

“I can come to Him now.”

Return to God honestly today.

DAY 4 — THE GOD WHO RESTORES

What does God give back?

Read:

Luke 15:22–24

The father gives:

A robe (covering)
A ring (authority)
Sandals (identity)

The son wanted to be a servant.
The father restores him as a son.

You cannot earn what God restores.

REFLECT

Where do you feel:

  • like you have to prove yourself?

  • like you’ve lost your place with God?

  • like you’re “less than” spiritually?

What would it look like to receive your identity again?

GO DEEPER

Read 1 John 3:1

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God.”

This is your identity.

Not earned.
Given.

PRAYER

Adoration
Father, You restore what I cannot earn.

Confession
Forgive me for trying to earn what You freely give.

Thanksgiving
Thank God that you are His child.

Listening
Ask:

“Where do I need to receive Your love more fully?”

PRACTICE

Live today as a son or daughter, not a servant.

Notice when you shift into:

  • performance

  • striving

  • earning

Pause and remind yourself:

“I belong.”

DAY 5 — THE GOD WHO INVITES

Will you come in?

Read:

Luke 15:25–32

The older brother stayed close physically
but distant in heart.

He says:

“I have been serving you…”

Not “loving.”
Not “trusting.”

Serving.

Keeping score.

The father goes out to him too.

The invitation is open.

But the story ends without resolution.

REFLECT

Where might you relate to the older brother?

  • doing the right things

  • but lacking joy or intimacy

  • struggling to celebrate grace for others

Are you inside the house—but outside the Father’s heart?

GO DEEPER

Read Micah 6:8

God desires more than outward obedience.

He desires a heart aligned with His.

PRAYER

Adoration
Father, You invite me into joy—not just duty.

Confession
Show me where I’ve been distant in heart.

Petition
Give me a heart that celebrates what You celebrate.

Listening
Ask:

“Where are You inviting me to come in?”

PRACTICE

Take one step toward joy:

  • celebrate someone else

  • release comparison

  • thank God for grace in your life and others

FINAL REFLECTION

Somewhere in this story, you are present.

You may be:

  • wandering

  • unaware

  • returning

  • or performing

But the center of the story is not you.

It is the Father.

A Father who seeks.
A Father who searches.
A Father who runs.
A Father who restores.
A Father who invites.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You that You did not remain distant.

You came near in Jesus.
You pursued us.
You carried our shame.
You brought us home.

Help us live this week aware of Your presence,
secure in Your love,
and ready to join You in pursuing others.

Amen.
