FROM ANXIETY TO TRUST

A 5-Day Formation Journey

Luke 12:13–34

Big Idea:
Your treasure reveals your trust.
And generosity is how the Father reshapes your heart.

Each day follows a simple rhythm:

  1. Read

  2. Reflect

  3. Theological depth

  4. Structured prayer

  5. Practice

Move slowly. Do not rush.

DAY 1 — BARNS AND FUNCTIONAL ATHEISM

What Am I Trusting?

Read: Luke 12:13–21

Read it slowly. Then read it again.

Notice how many times the rich man says “I.”

“I will tear down…”
“I will build…”
“I will store…”
“I will say to my soul…”

God is never referenced in his planning.

REFLECT

  • What do I instinctively rely on to secure my life?

  • What do I mentally rehearse when I think about my future?

  • If something were removed tomorrow, what would destabilize me most?

The rich man was not immoral.
He was self-sufficient.

His problem was not possession.
It was autonomy.

He built his future without reference to God.

This is what theologians sometimes call functional atheism — living as if God does not factor into practical reality.

GO DEEPER

Read Psalm 14:1.
“The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”

The biblical fool is not intellectually ignorant.
He lives without reference to God.

Luke 12 connects foolishness to misplaced trust.

PRAYER

Adoration:
Father, You are the giver of life and breath.

Confession:
Show me where I plan as if You are unnecessary.

Sit quietly for 3–5 minutes.
Ask: “Where am I building barns without reference to You?”

Write down whatever surfaces.

Petition:
Reorder my trust.

PRACTICE:

Identify one area of planning (retirement, savings, career, investments) and intentionally pray over it this week.

Invite God into what you normally manage alone.

DAY 2 — ANXIETY AS THEOLOGY

What Does My Anxiety Reveal?

Read: Luke 12:22–31

Underline every reference to:

  • Anxiety

  • The Father

  • Value

Jesus connects worry to view of God.

This is critical.

Anxiety is not just emotional.
It is theological.

It answers the question:
“Who is ultimately responsible for securing my life?”

Jesus says:

“Your Father knows that you need them.”

The contrast in the text:

  • Ravens (unclean birds)

  • Lilies (temporary beauty)

  • Nations (those without covenant knowledge)

You are more valuable.

REFLECT

  • When I feel anxious, what do I assume about God?

  • Do I believe He is attentive?

  • Do I believe He is distant?

  • Do I believe He is reluctant?

GO DEEPER

Read Deuteronomy 8:11–18.

Prosperity can lead to forgetting.
Anxiety can lead to clinging.

Both reveal fragile trust.

PRAYER

Adoration:
You are a Father who knows.

Confession:
When I worry, I act as if I am alone.

Name specific anxieties.

Thanksgiving:
Thank Him for three specific provisions in your life.

Listening:
Sit silently for 3 minutes.

Ask: “Father, where do I need to trust You more?”

PRACTICE

When anxiety rises today, pray this simple sentence:

“You know what I need.”

Let that reframe your nervous system.

DAY 3 — TREASURE DIRECTS THE HEART

Where Is My Treasure Going?

Read: Luke 12:32–34

Jesus says:

“Fear not, little flock…
Sell your possessions…
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Notice the order.

He does not say:
“Where your heart is, your treasure will follow.”

He says:
“Where your treasure is, your heart will follow.”

Your money trains your desires.

Generosity is spiritual formation.

REFLECT

  • Where does my lifestyle money go?

  • What do I prioritize when I have margin?

  • What story would my bank statement tell about my trust?

GO DEEPER

Read 1 Timothy 6:6–19.

Paul warns the rich not to put hope in wealth,
but to be rich in good works and generous.

Notice:
Hope is misplaced when wealth becomes security.

PRAYER

Adoration:
You have given me the Kingdom.

Confession:
Where I grip too tightly, loosen my hands.

Petition:
Teach me to seek the Kingdom first.

Listening:
Ask: “Is there one area where You are inviting me to redirect my treasure?”

Write it down.

PRACTICE

Review the last 60 days of spending.

Not with guilt.
With prayer.

Ask: “What is this forming in me?”

DAY 4 — SPIRIT-FILLED GENEROSITY

What Does Kingdom Community Look Like?

Read: Acts 2:42–47 and Acts 4:32–37

Luke wrote both Luke and Acts.

In Luke 12, Jesus teaches generosity.
In Acts, the Spirit makes it visible.

The first visible mark of Pentecost was open hands.

People sold possessions and distributed to any who had need.

Then read Acts 5:1–11.

Ananias and Sapphira were not judged for withholding money.
They were judged for pretending sacrifice.

Integrity matters in generosity.

REFLECT

  • Has anyone ever been stunned by my generosity?

  • Do I give safely — or sacrificially?

  • Would my giving change if I believed I could never outgive God?

Theological Insight

Generosity is not law.
It is participation in God’s character.

PRAYER

Adoration:
You are radically generous toward me.

Confession:
Free me from performative generosity.

Petition:
Make my giving an act of integrity, not image.

Listening:
Ask: “Who is one person You want me to invest in?”

PRACTICE

Act intentionally this week.

One person.
One need.
One deliberate investment.

DAY 5 — SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM

From Anxiety to Trust

Read: Luke 12:22–34 again.

Read slowly.

Notice tone.

Jesus is not harsh.
He is tender.

“Fear not, little flock.”

The difference between hoarding and generosity
is whether you believe you are fathered.

REFLECT

  • What shifted in me this week?

  • Where am I freer?

  • Where am I still clinging?

GO DEEPER

Read Matthew 6:33.

“Seek first the Kingdom…”

Kingdom-seeking rearranges priorities.

FULL PRAYER FLOW

Move through this slowly:

  1. Adoration
    Praise God as Father.

  2. Confession
    Name misplaced trust.

  3. Thanksgiving
    Thank Him for provision.

  4. Petition
Ask for courage to live generously.

  5. Listening
Sit in silence for 5 minutes.

  6. Commitment
Write one concrete step you will take.

FINAL PRACTICE

Loosen your grip somewhere specific.

Not impulsively.
Intentionally.

Closing Reflection

The rich fool trusted barns.
The anxious disciple doubts Fatherhood.
The Kingdom disciple gives.

Your treasure reveals your trust.

And generosity is how the Father reshapes your heart.
