Session 6: Sent With Burning Hearts
Series: Live the Story, Tell the Story
Message: Sent Again — Luke 24 + Genesis 12
Big Idea
When Jesus awakens your heart, He awakens your purpose.
From Abram to the Emmaus disciples, God’s call is always personal: He meets us, opens our eyes, and sends us.
Opening Question (5 min)
Where have you recently felt “dimmed” spiritually—tired, confused, or disappointed?
What helped you feel reawakened?
Scripture Snapshot (Leader Reads – 2 min)
Genesis 12: God calls Abram to “go,” without clarity, so he can be a blessing.
Luke 24: Two discouraged disciples walk away from Jerusalem saying, “we had hoped.” Jesus comes near, listens, opens the Scriptures, reveals Himself at the table—then they turn around and go back on mission.
The pattern: Jesus meets us → opens our hearts → sends us.
Sent With Burning Hearts (25–30 min discussion)
1 · Jesus Meets Us in Our Disappointment
Luke 24:13–24
Truth: Jesus walks with us even when we walk the wrong way.
Why it matters: Disappointment (“we had hoped…”) can blind us and push us inward.
Leader Questions:
What disappointments do you see in these disciples?
Where in your own life might disappointment be creating distance—from God or mission?
Practice: Name one “we had hoped…” honestly before God this week.
2 · Jesus Opens Our Hearts Through His Word
Luke 24:25–32
Truth: Our problem is not lack of information but lack of interpretation.
Why it matters: Jesus Himself must open the Scriptures for our hearts to burn again.
Leader Questions:
What’s the difference between knowing the Bible and feeling awakened by it?
What’s one small shift you could make to engage Scripture more openly?
Practice: Read one Gospel chapter a day with the prayer, “Jesus, open my eyes.”
3 · Jesus Reveals Himself at the Table and Sends Us
Luke 24:30–35 + Genesis 12
Truth: Real encounters lead to real movement.
Why it matters: When we recognize Jesus, we can’t stay where we are—He sends us back into our city, work, friendships, and purpose.
Leader Questions:
Why do the disciples immediately go back to Jerusalem at night?
Where is your “Jerusalem”—a place of calling you’ve avoided or drifted from?
What’s one step toward living as sent there?
Practice: Take one “return to Jerusalem” step this week—reach out, serve, or re-engage intentionally.
Discussion Questions (10–12 min)
Choose 2–3:
Which phrase fits you right now: “we had hoped…” or “our hearts burned…”?
What blinds you most easily—disappointment, distraction, or assumptions about Jesus?
How would your week look different if you lived as someone sent?
Who might God be inviting you to walk with, like Jesus on the Emmaus road?
Practices for the Week (5–7 min)
Choose 1–2 together:
Scripture Renewal: One gospel chapter a day, asking Jesus to open your eyes.
Simple Hospitality: Share a meal/coffee/walk with someone outside your usual circle.
Return to Jerusalem: Take one intentional step in the place you’ve been avoiding.
Name Your “We Had Hoped”: Bring one disappointment honestly to God in prayer.
Prayer (8–10 min)
Prompt: Where do you need Jesus to open your eyes or reignite courage?
Pray in pairs or as a group.
Jesus, meet us on our road, open our eyes, and send us again with burning hearts.
Make us people who bring blessing wherever You lead.
Closing Invitation
Live the Story: Let Jesus meet you where you are.
Tell the Story: Walk back into your world as someone sent.
